Abstract: This study examines the relationship between homophobia and individuals' acceptance of stereotypes about gays and lesbians. We asked 140 participants to rate how much they agreed with 10 stereotypes about gays and lesbians and same-sex relationships. Participants also completed an individual characteristics questionnaire and a measure of homophobia. Based on previous research, we expected to find small to moderate correlations between these variables and acceptance of stereotypes about gays and lesbians. Using regression models, we found that homophobia was associated with acceptance of negative, but not positive, stereotypes about gays and lesbians. There were few effects for individual characteristics on stereotype acceptance. Implications and limitations of these results are discussed along with directions for future research.
