Cognitive Coping and Psychological Adjustment in Different Types of Stressful Life Events
Author(s): Nadia Garnefski, Vivian Kraaij
Abstract: General population adults (N = 139) completed measures of cognitive coping strategies, depression, and indicated their most stressful life event. Three types of negative life events were distinguished: somatic events, bereavements, and divorces. Results showed significant differences across events in the use of coping strategies. Regression analyses indicated relatively consistent significant relationships of the cognitive coping strategies and depressive symptoms. General maladaptive effects were found for Self-blame, Rumination, and Catastrophizing. Adaptive effects were found for Positive Reappraisal. An adaptive effect for Putting into Perspective was found only for somatic events.
