Abstract: Undergraduates (N = 323) who expressed a commitment to study in the discipline gave their judgments of the importance of certain academic sources of influence ‘in creating your interest in the psychology major.’ Upperclassmen with several completed college psychology hours, and freshmen with at least some such credits, attached high importance to college courses, and far less importance to college counselors and corresponding high school sources. These results support a model that emphasizes the role of early college coursework in students' pathways to the psychology major. However, the emergence of a substantial cohort of committed freshmen with no completed college psychology credits points to the influence of high school courses in recruiting majors.
