Abstract: This study examined the potential of a physiologically based personality inventory in identifying personality dimensions and profiles among police recruits which may be useful in the assessment process. Police Academy recruits (N = 105) completed the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI; Cloninger, Przybeck, Svrakic, & Wetzel, 1994) prior to the completion of training. Cluster analysis revealed two distinct personality profiles with groups differing significantly on temperament dimensions (Novelty Seeking, Harm Avoidance, Reward Dependence, and Persistence) and the character dimension of Cooperativeness and Self-Directedness. The potential value of using the TCI in the police recruit assessment is discussed.
