Interests Under the Open Mind and the Open Sky: Noctcaelador, The Big Five, and Leisure Interests
Author(s): William E. Kelly
Abstract: Noctcaelador, emotional and cognitive attachment to the night sky, has been linked with openness, curiosity, and aesthetic imagination. This study examined how noctcaelador relates to patterns of leisure interest and personality among 134 university students. Participants completed the brief version of the Noctcaelador Inventory (NI-4), the Ten Item Personality Inventory, and a 83-item Leisure Interests measure encompassing thirteen domains. Zero-order correlations revealed significant associations between noctcaelador and reflective, creative, and exploratory leisure interests, including astro-leisure, artistic, and intellectual activities. Hierarchical regressions demonstrated that noctcaelador predicted unique variance in these domains beyond the Big Five traits. Mediation analysis found that noctcaelador fully mediated the relationship between openness and astro-leisure, highlighting its role as a motivational bridge between personality and behavior. Findings suggest that noctcaelador represents a behavioral expression of aesthetic openness and cosmic curiosity, linking personality, creativity, and night sky engagement within an integrated framework of self-expression and meaning.
