Publication Process: From Submission to Publication

The following outlines the standard publication process for manuscripts submitted to Individual Differences Research (IDR). Our goal is to maintain a fair, transparent, and efficient workflow from initial submission through online publication. Authors are encouraged to review this section alongside the Peer Review, Manuscript Guidelines, and Publication Policies pages for complete information.

1. Submission and Editorial Screening

All manuscripts are submitted through the journal’s online submission page. Upon receipt, the editor conducts an initial screening to determine suitability for the journal’s scope, adherence to formatting requirements, and compliance with ethical and scientific standards. Manuscripts that meet these basic criteria proceed to peer review.

Note: Submission constitutes an agreement to publish with Individual Differences Research if the paper is accepted.

2. Peer Review

Manuscripts that pass initial editorial screening are sent for external peer review. External review normally takes 2-4 weeks, depending on reviewer availability and manuscript complexity.

For further details, see the Peer Review page.

3. Editorial Decision

Following peer review, the editor communicates one of four decisions to authors:

  • Accept (no further revisions required)
  • Minor Revision (revisions required in conjunction with or before acceptance)
  • Major Revision (re-review may be necessary)
  • Reject (does not meet editorial or scientific standards)

Manuscripts requiring major revision are re-evaluated by the original reviewers when possible. Those with minor revisions are typically re-evaluated by the editor.

4. Acceptance and Proofing

Accepted manuscripts may undergo light editorial modification during copyediting and typesetting to ensure consistency with journal style and format. Authors are provided a proof of the pre-published article by email for review and approval prior to online release.

5. Online Publication

Articles are published online on a rolling basis within a few weeks of final acceptance. Each article is assigned a DOI before publication and is immediately accessible and citable in the current volume. The final version of record is indexed in databases. We have no control over indexing time.

6. Post-Publication

Minor typographical or metadata corrections may be made post-publication following editorial review. Substantive corrections may be published as errata. Retractions are documented transparently on the article record.

In summary:

The full publication process from submission to online publication normally takes 4-10 weeks, depending on reviewer turnaround and editorial volume. This streamlined timeline reflects IDR’s commitment to prompt, rigorous, and transparent dissemination of high-quality research in individual differences.
