Abstract: Given the increase in the number of individuals who have experienced trauma coupled with the increasing numbers of individuals experiencing body image distortion, this study examined the relationship between the symptoms of post-traumatic symptoms that may predispose someone to the development of body image distortion. The trauma symptoms of anger/irritability, avoidance, and impaired self-reference, were investigated to identify which symptoms may best predict the development of body-image distortion. An additional focus was the mediating effect of gender upon the relationship between trauma symptoms and body image distortion. Participants (N = 314) completed the Body Shape Questionnaire and the Trauma Symptom Inventory. The best predictors for body image distortion in females were impaired self-reference and anger/irritability. For males the best predictors were anger/irritability and avoidance. Results and directions for future research are discussed.
