Abstract: Hurt feelings involve acute emotional responses and can be expressed in one of two behavioral patterns: introjective and retaliatory. The present study assessed the convergence of introjective and retaliatory hurt and intra-and-interpersonal functioning. Results revealed that both introjective and retaliatory hurt reactivity are associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression and lower levels of global self-worth and social acceptance. However, retaliatory as compared to introjective hurt better explained depressive symptomatology; whereas, introjective hurt was a better predictor (inversely) of global self-worth and social acceptance.
