Relationships Between Nature-Related Variables and Noctcaelador
William E. Kelly
Abstract
Previous research indicates relationships between noctcaelador, a felt bond with the night sky, and nature-related variables. However, this remains relatively unexplored. In the current study 203 adults completed measures of noctcaelador, night sky watching frequency, openness to experience, and several nature-related variables including preferences for the outdoors, nature connectedness, engagement with beauty in nature, inclusion of nature in self, place attachment, and place related restorative outcomes. Noctcaelador and night sky watching were related to most nature-related variables at the bivariate level. However, regression analyses found that after accounting for openness, experiencing beauty in nature was the only independent nature-related variable to uniquely predict noctcaelador. The only nature-related variable uniquely associated with night sky watching, on the other hand, was preference for the outdoors. Noctcaelador incrementally predicted night sky watching frequency above openness and nature-related variables. Limitations of the results, implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
